Men’s Golf Finishes Second in Match Play Day of Big South Championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. – A valiant effort by the Radford men's golf team fell just short as the Highlanders fell to Campbell in the final match play of the Big South Championship on Wednesday at The Patriot Golf Course at Grand Harbor. Radford defeated Longwood in the first match play earlier in the day.

The second-place finish was the highest the Highlanders ever had in the Big South Tournament. The previous highest was third place back in 2008.

Patrick Gareiss forced a playoff hole after he and his competitor were tied after the 18^th hole, with the Camels up 2-1. Gareiss was par for course and sunk the hole in the allotted shots. Romai Lanteri needed a birdie or better to give Campbell the Big South title. Tyler Hull and Josh Hetherington were tied through 18, but didn't finish because of the determined outcome.

Hunter Duncan and Bryce Corbett were the first two to finish. Duncan won his round but Corbett fell in his. Nick Taliaferro fell to Henrik Lilja, 2&1.

Corbett and Taliaferro made up for it with a pair of wins in the first match against Longwood. Corbett was five holes up with three left to play and Taliaferro was 1 up through 18. Duncan, who had a stellar Big South Tournament, also defeated the Lancers' Mile Parroco, 1 up thorugh 18.

The win against Longwood placed Radford into the match play championship. It was the first time the Highlanders made it to the match play when the Big South chose the format three years ago.
