Radford Falls to PC in Game One, Evens Series Behind Marvin in Game Two

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford softball team split with Presbyterian on Friday to open a three-game series at Radford Softball Stadium. Presbyterian took the first game, 11-7, while the second was a 1-0 pitcher's duel that ended in Radford's favor.

Game 1
Radford was unable to battle back after Presbyterian tallied 18 hits and tallied four home runs, along with three doubles. Despite the Highlanders striking first thanks to a grand slam by Autumn Slemaker in the first inning, Presbyterian scored 10 runs before the Highlanders could answer.

The answer came in the fifth inning when Talia Douglas scored on a sac fly and Lindsay Hunter plated a pair with a two-run single up the middle. That put Radford in striking distance, 10-7. Presbyterian gave themselves an insurance run in the seventh inning with a Jillian Hewes RBI double.

The Blue Hose scored three runs on two home runs in the second inning and took a 5-4 lead with a pair of RBI doubles in the third. PC plated five more in the fourth inning on six hits, highlighted by a pair of solo home runs to lead off the inning.

Sarah Smith pitched 3.1 innings of relief and only allowed one run on five hits. She struck out two of the 14 batters she faced. Each of her strikeouts ended the inning leaving a runner in scoring position.

Six different Highlanders had hits, while Slemaker and Hunter had multi-RBI games. Abby Wilson was the other Highlander responsible for plating a run.

Game 2
Jessie Marvin retired 15 batters in a row and ended the game with a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory to even the weekend series.

Talia Douglas broke the no-hit bid from Haley Haselden in the sixth inning beating out an infield single up the middle that Kaitlyn Tucker, the PC second baseman dove to stop. Douglas moved to third on a double to center field by Madison Canady. After a fly out to right field, Autumn Slemaker laid down the one-out bunt and Douglas was able to score the game's only run.

Marvin allowed a single to lead off the third inning and didn't allow a single base runner through the final four frames after three straight outs in the third inning. She struck out the side in the second inning and totaled six three up, three down innings.

She finished the game with seven innings pitched, six strikeouts, one hit and 22 batters faced on 77 pitches. Only 19 of Marvin's 77 pitches were balls. She threw 58 strikes and earned her seventh win of the season.

Haselden – the Presbyterian pitcher – only allowed two hits but walked four. She threw 102 pitches and faced 25 total batters.

Up Next
Radford will look to win the series over Presbyterian on Saturday at 9 a.m. The game time was moved up to try and beat the inclement weather in the forecast.
