Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Carroll’s Late Heroics Give Highlanders Third Straight Win

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (3-9, 2-1 BSC) took down Winthrop (4-6, 2-2 BSC) Wednesday afternoon for their first win at the SORC thanks to the heroics of Lindsey Carroll's free position goal with 13 seconds left in the game.

Winthrop did storm out to a 2-0 lead in the game, but that was the only lead they would hold all day. Radford responded by going on a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the day. Carroll scored her first goal of the afternoon with 20:47 left in the first half to make it a 1-2 deficit. Three minutes later, Ashlyn Grogan scored equalizing the game at two. The freshman Ava Goeller gave Radford the 3-2 lead at the 16:28 mark off a sweet pass from behind the net from Grace Gleason.

From there the two squads would trade goals. Winthrop tied the game at three, but Radford responded again with 13:40 left in the first half on a man-up goal from Jessica Diorio. Winthrop tied the game again at four, and this time it was Goeller with her second goal of the game that would give Radford a lead that stuck through the half.

Kirsten Grzybowski got in on the first half scoring action with three minutes remaining, extending the lead to 6-4. The freshman duo of Diorio and Goeller teamed up for the final goal of the half, with Diorio scoring and Goeller providing the assist. This capped a 3-0 run for Radford to end the half, and was the exclamation point to a strong first half.

The Gleason sistsers would extend the lead right away in the second half. G. Gleason's goal at the 28:44 mark assisted by Margaret Gleason made it 8-4 Highlanders, their largest lead of the game. Winthrop showed they weren't going to fade away quietly though, ripping off back-to-back goals to make it an 8-6 game.

M. Gleason's goal at the 15:47 mark extended the lead to 9-6. The Highlanders were on the wrong end of a controversial call a couple minutes later, though, as Goeller scored what seemed to be her third goal of the day but it was called back due to a stick violation. Winthrop responded with two goals after some yellow card problems by Radford and the game became close for the first time in over 20 minutes at 9-8. Winthrop would eventually tie the game at nine-all with just over a minute remaining in the game.

Radford called a timeout to regroup and came out of it strong. Goeller won a vital draw control to give Radford possession and the final shot of the game. Carroll was hit hard going in to make a shot which set up a free position shot for the Highlanders. Carroll was clutch for the Highlanders once again finding the net and giving Radford the 10-9 lead that would hold and give them the win.

This marked the third straight victory for the Highlanders, which is the first time in program history that the team has strung together a trio of wins. Maddie Bowman had one of her best performances in the net all season with 11 saves. Many of the saves came from good looks by the Eagles, but Bowman kept them at bay all day. Her 11 saves were the most she recorded since at Virginia Tech earlier this year, and her .550 save percentage was a season-high by .034 points.

The goal scoring was a team effort for Radford today as three different players recorded two goals. M. Gleason provided a team-high two assists while Goeller ripped off a team-high nine shots. G. Gleason and Morgan Parsons led the team in ground balls with both picking up four. Bendrick was also dominant all day in draw controls, winning a team-high seven.
