Radford Picks Up Huge Win Against Charlotte

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (9-6) and Charlotte (11-8) had an exciting match Friday afternoon that ended in a 4-3 win for the Highlanders with Radford winning four singles courts.

Aditya Balsekar was the first freshman to come up big for the Highlanders. Balsekar won in straight sets on court six but had to come back after trailing 1-4 in the second set to eventually win 6-2, 7-5. That tied the match at one, leading to Yevhen Sirous picking up a huge point on the top flight. Sirous won in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(1) over the 90th ranked singles player in the nation, and suddenly it was a 2-1 lead for Radford.

Konstantinos Raptis was the next Highlander to come up victorious on court four. Raptis dominated in the first set but struggled in the second. The third set was tightly contested and required a tiebreaker but Raptis came up clutch once again and made it a 3-1 match with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(5) victory. Charlotte took court five however, making it a 3-2 match before the skies opened up and lightning forced the match indoors.

After a 70-minute delay, Radford and Charlotte returned to play. The freshman Guilherme Severin showed zero rust coming back out to finish off his third set on court three and dismantled his opponent to the tune of a 6-2, 6(4)-7, 6-3 victory. Severin came up big for the Highlanders in unusual circumstance to clinch the big win. The final singles court on the day did go to Charlotte, making it a 4-3 final score as Demis Taramonlis came up just short against the 88th ranked singles player in the nation.

Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Balsekar's win on court six gave him his 12th straight singles victory, boosting his record to an outstanding 13-2 record overall. Raptis' victory on court four was his 11th victory on that flight this season, while Severin joined the ranks of double-digit singles victories on the team with his 10th and third straight. The win today also marks Radford's third straight season finishing with a winning percentage over .500.
