Defense Shines and Offense Powers Big Win Over Charleston Southern

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team scored a whopping 14 runs to help fuel a comfortable victory over Charleston Southern Friday night as the hunt for the Big South postseason kicks into full force.

The Highlanders cored early and often to put Charleston Southern out of reach of a comeback. In the first inning, Straton Podaras got his strong offensive night off to a good start with an RBI single. Anthony Galati also laid down a good sacrifice bunt to bring in a second run to create a 2-0 lead.

Greg Duncan took over from there and kept Charleston Southern quiet over four-straight scoreless frames to start the game. Duncan's strong start tallied six strikeouts and he only allowed 2 earned runs in 5.2 innings.

The offense provided strong support for that start, as Radford struck again in the third and fourth innings. A Dac Archer single scored Podaras in the third while Connor Bagnieski played long ball in the fourth to make it 4-0.

In the fifth inning the Highlanders really started to pull away. Archer added another RBI off a double and then scored off a balk by the Buccaneer pitcher. Sean Cheely got into the scoring fun with a 3-run blast to left field to make it a 9-1 lead.

Charleston Southern would come as close as a 9-6 score, but Radford fully put the game away with five more runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Bruce Hudson and Derek Domecq would close out the final three innings with scoreless frames and a combined six strikeouts.

Overall, on the night Radford had many different Highlanders see incredible nights at the plate. Podaras tallied five hits in six plate appearances, knocking in two runs and scoring one himself. David Bryant and Archer both also totaled three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. This was also the second straight game where Radford hit two home runs in the same game.

The Highlander defense also made multiple defensive gems throughout the game. Duncan caught a quick comebacker to the mound while Bryant made a leaping grab at shortstop in the same inning. Late in the game Bagnieski and Hudson teamed up for a great play as Bagnieski knocked down a hard hit ground ball and Hudson raced to the bag to receive the throw in time.
