Radford Tops Winthrop on Senior Day

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team put themselves in the driver's seat with a 4-3 win over Winthrop on Senior Day Saturday at Radford Softball Stadium and is just one win away from clinching a spot in the Big South Tournament.

Lindsay Hunter came up clutch with a pair of RBIs – including a go-ahead RBI single that plated Destiny Freeman in the sixth inning. Freeman reached on a bloop single to left field and moved to second on a stolen base. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Hunter roped a ball over the second baseman's head that drove in Freeman to put Radford on top, 4-3.

Hunter's first RBI was the first run of the game and it came in the second inning. She had the bases loaded with one out and was able to plate Madison Canady with a groundout to shortstop.

Winthrop tied the game when Ashley Westbrooks drove in a run in the third inning. The Highlanders answered taking advantage of an Eagle error that allowed two runs to score in the bottom half of the third. That put Radford ahead, 3-1.

In the circle, Jessie Marvin was cruising retiring eight in a row after allowing the Eagles to score their first run. She finished with seven innings pitched, three runs – two earned – on five hits and five strikeouts to pick up her 10th win of the season. The five strikeouts put her at 78 on the season and matches a season-best for the senior.

Her streak ended at eight in a row retired, after she allowed a double in the sixth inning. The next at-bat saw the game reach a tie when Taylor Charlton tied hit a two-run home run to left field. Momentum by the Highlander defense, after stranding the go-ahead run on third base, carried over into the batter's box so Freeman and Hunter could put Radford on top.

Marvin, along with four other Highlanders, were honored prior to first pitch. The others were Sydney Fisher, Talia Douglas, Sarah Smith and Lauren Maddrey – from last year's class. Fisher scored a run and Douglas had the only multi-hit game for Radford going 2-for-3.
