Radford Takes Series Over Winthrop, Earns Final Spot in Big South Tournament

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team won the first game of the doubleheader against Winthrop, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon to clinch the series and propel themselves into the Big South Tournament. The second game at Radford Softball Stadium ended in Winthrop's favor, 4-1.

Game 1
Autumn Slemaker and Riley Oakes provided a huge difference as the Highlanders won the series and clinched a spot in Big South Tournament with a 5-3 win in game one of the day.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Winthrop scored the game's first run on a double steal and the Highlanders answered in the bottom of the inning when Oakes scored on a groundout by Destiny Freeman.

Radford showed great defense in the first inning as Freeman turned a double play getting the would-be tagging runner out at the plate to end the inning and keep it a one-run game. The Eagles added a single run in the second and third innings via the long ball to take a 3-1 lead.

Slemaker changed the momentum with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning and cut the deficit to one. The Highlanders left the bases loaded in the fourth but Slemaker was due back up in the fifth inning.

The sophomore delivered a two-run shot after Freeman doubled to right center field. Slemaker hit another long shot to left center field for her second of the game and sixth of her season. It was her first multi-home run game of the season.

After Slemaker put the Highlanders on top, 4-3, Taylor Breidt added a run with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 5-3 game. The momentum carried into the bottom of fifth inning after Talia Douglas turned an inning-ending double play to preserve the lead.

Skyler DeHart earned the start in the circle but only tossed 1.2 innings. Oakes entered in the second inning and finished with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief. She earned her third win of the season. Offensively, Oakes went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Jessie Marvin came in for the final inning and picked up the final three outs for her second save of the season and gave the Highlanders the final spot in the Big South Tournament.

Game 2
Madison Canady drove in the first run of the second game with an RBI single to right field. Winthrop took advantage of three Radford errors through the first three innings and took a 2-1 lead through three innings.

Sarah Smith was dealing in the circle and tallied a career-high five strikeouts through two innings. She finished the game with six strikeouts but allowed four runs – two earned – on nine hits.

Winthrop tallied another run in the third inning after stringing together three hits. It added to its lead in the sixth inning when Ansley Gilreath tallied a solo home run and made it a 4-1 game.

Talia Douglas tallied two hits, including a double. Sydney Fisher scored the Highlanders' only run. Canady recorded the game's RBI for Radford. Olivia Turpin made an appearance pinch hitting in the second game.
