Highlanders Mark Strong Weekend at Elon Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Radford men's tennis program wrapped up a three-day tournament at the Elon Invitational Sunday afternoon, highlighted by four Highlanders advancing to the finals of their sides of brackets in single play and one pairing of Highlanders advancing to the finals in doubles play.

On the first day of competition Radford got off to a strong start in the Powell singles bracket as Karl Katlaps and Robert Hagen both picked up wins. Katlaps defeated his Elon opponent in comeback fashion 5-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 while Hagen also went three sets in a win over Elon 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(6). In the Phoenix singles bracket Radford got two more wins thanks to Andres Silva and Raphael Mujan. Silva dispatched his Richmond foe 6-4, 6-2 while Mujan defeated his UNC Greensboro opponent 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. In Demis Taramonlis first action of the weekend he took down his James Madison opponent in dominant fashion 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles play, the pairing of Guilherme Severin and Raptis kicked off their strong weekend with a 7-6(6) win over UNC Greensboro. Taramonlis and Silva also opened their weekend with a 6-2 win over Charlotte.

On day two of competition Will Crane got things started with two wins to advance to the finals of his side of the Powell singles bracket. Crane picked up wins over UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T. Katlaps also advanced to the finals of his side of the Powell singles bracket with wins against UNC Greensboro and Richmond. Hagen was the third Highlander to advance to the finals of the Powell singles bracket as he picked up wins against James Madison and UNC Greensboro.

Andres Silva was able to advance to the finals of the Phoenix singles bracket thanks to his two victories over Elon and James Madison. Severin also rebounded in singles play with a brisk 6-1, 6-3 win over North Carolina Central.

In doubles play Saturday Severin and Raptis advanced to the finals of the Phoenix doubles bracket with a huge 6-4 victory over Liberty.

On the third day of competition Radford competed in four finals. Robert Hagen won his side of the Powell singles bracket while Taramonlis and Silva picked up a doubles win over Elon to finish out the impressive weekend.

Up Next
Should any Highlanders be selected to play the ITA All-American Championships are in Tulsa, Ok. this year. Radford's next tournament other than that will be the River City Open from October 8th through October 10th.
