Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comeback Attempt at Presbyterian Falls Short

CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford Women's Basketball program fell at Presbyterian 74-63 Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders trailed by as much as 18 points in the first half of the game and battled back to tie the game in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling.

Radford jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Taiye Johnson layup in the opening minutes of the game, but it was the only lead the team would hold as Presbyterian sprinted out the gates with an 11-0 run to take an 11-2 lead. The deficit got as bad as 26-8 at the start of the second quarter before the Highlanders found their offensive rhythm.

Kyanna Morgan got the scoring started in the second quarter and the Highlanders got their first run of the day started thanks to layups by Ashley Tudor and Danielle Montelbano. Bridget Birkhead did the rest, catching absolute fire hitting four three-pointers in a row boosting her first half point total to 12. Vanessa Blake also joined the scoring action and it wound up being just a 35-31 deficit at the half.

Coming out of the locker room the Highlanders were just edged out in the third quarter 17-16 by the Blue Hose. Tudor caught fire over the final minutes of the third quarter with a three-pointer to go along with an and-one. Tudor would bring that momentum into the final quarter where the Highlanders attempted one last comeback push.

Tudor scored five straight points to open the fourth quarter thanks to a three-pointer and a pair of made free throws. The 5-0 run tied the game up at 52-all and gave Radford's its first chance at taking the lead since the opening minutes of the game. Presbyterian had one last run left in the tank however, scoring 8 points to Radford's 1 over five minutes to give the Blue Hose a lead they would not relinquish. Birkhead nailed one last three-pointer with 20 seconds left, but it wasn't enough as Presbyterian walked away with the 74-63 win.

Looking inside the box score the Highlanders had three players reach double figures. Birkhead and Tudor both reached 15 points while Montelbano scored 11 for the team while marking her third straight game with five or more assists. On the boards no one player separated from the rest of the group as five players pulled down four or more rebounds.

QUOTABLE
"Obviously the start was too slow, we started a bit lethargic, and Presbyterian was the aggressor. We had some stretches where we made some runs and closed the window. I told the team after the game that it's always tough to beat Presbyterian on the road no matter the record. We made a change in the defense in the second quarter, picked up the pace and rebounded. It gave us a little bit of life and we were much more assertive on the offensive end." -Head Coach Mike McGuire.
