Women’s Soccer Dispatches Gardner-Webb 3-0 in Big Road Victory

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer program went into enemy territory Saturday night for a big-time conference match-up with Gardner-Webb and came away with a decisive 3-0 victory.

After scoring two goals in the opening minutes against Charleston Southern last week, Kat Parris wasted no time doing the same tonight against Gardner-Webb. The sophomore connected for her third goal in two games in just the fifth minute to give Radford an early 1-0 lead. Lilly Short penetrated the box and threaded a perfect pass to Parris who powered a ball past a Runnin' Bulldog defender for the early lead.

It would only take another 20 minutes for the Highlanders to strike again. Katelyn O'Donnell made a great pass to Parris at the midfield just in front of the box and then snuck past multiple opposing defenders. Parris picked up on the open O'Donnell and crafted a perfect pass back to O'Donnell who then doubled the Radford lead.

After O'Donnell's second goal of the year, Radford would cruise their way through the rest of the game. The defense was stout once again to post its second straight shutout despite facing 17 Gardner-Webb shots, the first time the Highlanders have been out-shot this season. Jordan Phillips was perfect in the net collecting four saves along the way.

In the 86th minute, the Highlanders decided to play add-on. Ashley Loundermon netted her first career goal for the Highlanders, assisted by Skyler Prosser. With the 3-0 lead, the decision was set and Radford earned its ninth overall win and fifth conference win of the season.

With a goal and assist tonight, Parris moves her season point total to 18 which is a team best. Short's assist was her fourth of the season while Phillips' save total sits at 38 while facing 107 shots. It was another great night for one of the best teams in the nation at drawing corner kicks as the Highlanders collected another 12 tonight.

"I was extremely proud of our team going on the road and winning such an important game," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I thought we started the game well scoring two nice early goals. Our defense was rock solid against a great attacking team. Getting the second straight shutout was huge."

With tonight's win and results coming in from across the conference, Radford has sealed at least a fourth or better finish in the Big South standings. Head Coach Ben Sohrabi and his Highlanders will head to their 27th straight Big South postseason under the direction of Sohrabi. Radford's opponent is still to be determined with one game still left on all 10 Big South team's schedules.

Radford also sealed their first regular season unbeaten road record (5-0-2) in program history tonight since 2002. In 2002 the Highlanders also went unbeaten on the road (9-0) in the regular season before taking a road loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Just one match remains for the Highlanders in the 2022 regular season. Next Wednesday, Radford and High Point will finish things off with another sure-to-be fun meeting with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
