Women’s Soccer Falters in Second Half at UNC Greensboro, Falls 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Radford Highlanders women's soccer team hung around through the first half but ultimately were overcome by the Spartans offense, falling 3-0 to UNC Greensboro on Sunday evening.

KEY STATS

Senior goalkeeper Lexi Radvanyi made 10 saves, her second game of double-digit saves this season and also tying her career high.
Radford totaled four shots in the contest, with Brooke Pearson leading the team with two of the four. The junior also had the only shot on goal for Radford in the contest.
The Spartans led most offensive categories, including shots (25-4), shots on goal (13-1), and corner kicks (6-2).
This is the first time since 2016 that Radford women's soccer has not gotten a win or draw against an NCAA Division I opponent in the month of August.

PLAY BY PLAY
Out of the gates, the Highlanders settled in defensively, trying to hold back an aggressive UNC Greensboro side. Radvanyi made a couple of easy saves from distance in the opening couple of minutes, before Radford got their first corner kick of the match five minutes in. Though nothing of note came of it, it was a chance for the Highlanders to move their 11 down the field.

While the Spartans went to work, the Highlanders managed to keep possession through several minutes of action. A tense moment came in the 26th minute when a UNC Greensboro challenge was filed after a collision in the box, but the official did not overturn a previous no-call foul in the box. One of Radford's few chances came in the 33rd minute, as Pearson had a shot that went off the side netting for her first attempt of the match that was nearly a one-on-one with her and the goalkeeper. Lilly Clayton added a shot near the end of the first half that was well off target, and the contest reached halftime in a scoreless tie.

The Spartans kept the press up in the second half, which quickly led to their first goal. A Radford turnover in the midfield created space for Rina Ogimoto, who found Abby Cover in the right half of the box. Cover's shot with the right foot cleared Radvanyi and tucked inside the left post to give UNC Greensboro a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Radvanyi tried to keep her team in it with a few more nice saves, but the Highlanders could not get anything going offensively. After a scramble when Radford deflected a free kick in the attacking half, Laney Smith got it to Madison Bass right in front of the goal, and Bass scored from close range to make it 2-0. Not long after, Smith's header off a Spartan corner kick put found the back of the net to put things out of reach, as it was then 3-0 with just under 10 minutes remaining. Radvanyi essentially stood on her head to keep the deficit at three, making three consecutive saves from close range in the 85th minute. The final save gave the senior 10 in the contest, matching her career high.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"After the first 10 minutes of the first half, I thought we defended well for the rest of the half," added Head Coach Ben Sohrabi after the game. "And possibly had the best chance of the half to make it 1-0. A lot of credit was earned by UNCG in the second half. They were very good and had good possession and turned those possessions into chances that they eventually finished. We have to play two halves going forward."
