Highlanders Take Care of Business, Dispatch Wasps in Home Opener

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford women's basketball program took care of business Thursday night in their home opener with a 68-39 victory over Emory & Henry. Freshman Ashlyn Traylor highlighted the night with her first 20-point game of her young career.

It was a cold start for the Highlanders as they wouldn't find their first points of the game until the 6:32 mark of the first quarter. It was the freshman Traylor with the first make, easing her way through the paint for the layup. The two squads would trade punches until the two-minute mark where Traylor made another layup that gave Radford a lead they would not forgive.

Tatiana Beaumont followed the layup with a three-pointer and Rachel LaLonde got in on the scoring to help Radford hold a 16-9 advantage headed into the second quarter. The cold shooting would carry over into the second quarter. Maci Rhoades entered the game about halfway through the quarter and immediately made an impact. The freshman stole back-to-back passes and scored in transition to grow the lead to 28-19.

An impressive and-one by Ashley Panem followed by a trio of layups by Trinity Klock, LaLonde and Rhoades had the offense firing going into halftime with a 37-24 lead. The Wasps were using an advantage through the boards during the early going. Radford would come out more aggressive in the second half to seal the victory.

After another quiet quarter Radford finished strong in the fourth. The team hit two three-pointers thanks to Traylor and Klock late and went 7-18 from the field overall to cruise to the win. The team also got aggressive on the boards quickly passing the Wasps to gain an advantage on the night. As the final horn blew, the Highlanders walked away with the 68-39 win in the brand-new navy blue alternate jerseys.

TRAYLOR STAYS HOT
The freshman continued her immediate impact on the Highlanders with another impressive double-digit performance tonight. Traylor's aggressiveness paid off for 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and four steals overall in the game. Traylor pairs that with her 10-point four-assists performance against Kentucky earlier this week.

DEFENSE CREATING OFFENSE
Radford as a team caused 21 turnovers by the Wasps tonight and would create 26 points from those miscues. The team totaled 15 steals led by Traylor (four), LaLonde (three) and Rhoades (three). Going forward Radford will boast a high-octane defense that looks to create offensive opportunities and issues for opposing lineups.

WIN IT IN THE PAINT
The Highlanders struggled from beyond the arc tonight going 5-18 from deep but made up for it thanks to 38 points in the paint against the wasp. Traylor, Klock and Carmen Williams played a huge part in that effort. Williams finished the night going 4-9 from the field but had success with multiple step-back jumpers in the paint.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will have a quick turnaround as they hit the road for their third game of the week at Cincinnati. Both teams will come into the meeting with 1-1 records with Radford looking to stay hot against another big nonconference foe.
