LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Radford men's and women's cross country teams furthered their postseason runs with an impressive day at the NCAA Southeast Regionals at Louisville. In what was a day that featured some of the nation's best runners, an historic performance from Chloe Wellings highlighted the event as she etched her name in the program's record book.
The teams returned to the Bluegrass State for the second time this season. They ran at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, a site that saw six different Highlanders put their names in the program's record book earlier this year. The women opened the events with a 6,000-meter race before the men ran in a 10,000-meter race, their first 10K of the season.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Wellings paced the Highlanders, turning in a time of 21:50.9. The junior continued what has already been a record-breaking season. Her sub-22-minute time was the seventh fastest time in program history.
Lucy Thornton was the second scoring Highlander. She came across the line with a time of 23:11.4 to secure a spot in the top two-thirds of the field.
The upperclassmen trio of Rachel Millirons, Abby Seigel and MacKenzie Gardner rounded out the scoring for Radford. Millirons' time of 23:24.5 was the quickest of the trio as Seigel (23:30.3) and Gardner (23:37.9) finished within just a few positions of each other.
MEN'S RESULTS
Sam Sikora posted the quick time for Radford, registering a sub-33-minute performance. The junior crossed the line with a time of 32:59.6 to lead the Highlanders' scoring efforts.
Charlie Dance was not far behind as the freshman was the second member of the Radford squad to score. He posted a final time of 33:05.5 in his first time competing at the NCAA Southeast Regionals.
The duo of Clay Kelly and Ethan Gear were the third and fourth Highlanders to finish the race. They finished within three seconds of each other, posting times of 33:49.1 and 33:51.8, respectively.
Nick McCumsey, who was just named to the Big South All-Academic Team last week, was Radford's final scorer. The Christiansburg, Va. native broke the 34-minute mark, tallying a 33:57.8 final time.
UP NEXT
After missing out on automatic qualification, the Highlanders will now hope to be one of the 13 at-large teams selected by the NCAA to compete at the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. next Saturday, Nov. 19.
