Radford Splits Season Opening Doubleheader Behind Poole’s Grand Slam

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Radford softball program split their season opener doubleheader Friday against Binghamton and ETSU. Radford fell 3-2 to Binghamton but rebounded against ETSU to win 9-5 behind a grand slam from Hannah Poole. Radford's victory over ETSU also marked head coach Alisa Tasler's first career victory with the Highlanders.

Game 1
Radford opened its 2022 spring campaign against Binghamton and fell in a tight 3-2 game. Binghamton opened the game with a slim 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Radford responded in the next frame, as Cori McMillan knocked in the Highlanders' first run of the season with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Hannah Poole.

With two outs still in the top of the third, Madison Canady doubled and was brought home by a Jordan Moss single to make it a 2-1 Radford lead. DeHart preserved that lead with a perfect frame in the bottom of the third, one or two clean innings by the Riner, Va. native on the day.
Binghamton was able to use some small ball in the bottom of the fourth inning, however, to score two runs and retake a 3-2 lead. Radford attempted multiple comebacks in the sixth and seventh innings, but both attempts came up short.

In the sixth inning, Radford was able to get two runners on to start the inning with a single by Rachel Smith and walk by Lindsay Hunter. Binghamton made a change in the pitching circle that wound up saving the inning as their new pitcher retired three straight batters and end the threat. Emily Smith walked to start the seventh inning and made it to second thanks to a passed ball, but Binghamton turned a double play to end the threat and the game.

DeHart didn't get the win for the morning game, but still tossed six quality innings for the Highlanders striking out six and allowing just the three runs. Canady and Smith were both able to start their seasons with a multi-hit game, while Canady had the lone extra base hit for the team via a double.

Game 2
In their second game of the day the Highlanders faced ETSU and were able to rebound to pick up their first win of the season and Coach Tasler's first victory with the Highlanders. Jessie Marvin got the starting nod and opened the game with a strikeout and scoreless inning. Hunter and Canady were able to pick up singles in the bottom half of the inning, but ETSU escaped the threat to keep things scoreless.

Marvin tossed another scoreless inning in the second and her offense rewarded her with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Radford took advantage of a dropped fly ball to score their first run and Cassi Barbato drove in another run with a single down the right field line to make it 2-0 Radford.

The Buccaneers were able to take advantage of some walks and tally three runs in the third inning, however, and take a 3-2 lead. Radford responded with a burst of power in the bottom half of the inning to retake their lead. R. Smith was able to tie the game up at three with a single to left that scored McMillan and from there the Highlanders had the bases loaded.

Poole seized the opportunity and crushed a grand slam to left that opened things up and gave Radford a 7-3 lead. Poole's grand slam was the first by a Highlander since Autumn Slemaker did it against Presbyterian on April 23, 2021.

From there, Marvin continued to work out of some jams and keep the Buccaneers at bay. In the bottom of the sixth McMillan hit her first collegiate home run to make it a 9-4 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, ETSU mounted one last comeback attempt and was able to load the bases with just one out. They were only able to scratch across one run as Marvin closed out her complete game and Radford won 9-5.

Poole, Canady, McMillan and R. Smith were all able to record multi-hit games while the freshman R. Smith finished with a team best three hits. Marvin finished the day with a complete game and was able to work through seven walk and a hit by pitch to only give up four earned runs and earn her first win of the season.
