Softball Splits Day Two of Bash in the Boro

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Radford softball program split their two games on the second day of the Bash in the Boro Saturday with a win over ETSU but a loss in their afternoon bout with Georgia Southern.

Game 1
Radford started the day off right against ETSU. Emily Spingarn got her first starting nod for the Highlanders and tossed a clean first inning. In the top of the second Radford jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Taylor Breidt's first career home run. Spingarn kept her momentum rolling with clean second and third innings, only facing the minimum.

In the top of the fourth inning the Highlanders were truly able to open up their lead. Cassi Barbato got the scoring started with a single up the middle that scored Jordan Moss. Hannah Poole was then able to double in a pair of runs that made it a 6-0 Radford lead. An ETSU error allowed Poole to come around and score to make 7-0.

ETSU found their offense in the bottom half of the fourth, recording their first hits of the day. The Buccaneers were only able to scratch across one run, however, as Spingarn limited the damage. In the bottom of the fifth the Buccaneers came out swinging once again and got two runners into scoring position who were able to score by an error and make it just a 7-3 game.

ETSU moved another pair of runners back into scoring position forcing Radford to make a pitching a change. Skyler DeHart entered the game and immediately shut things down with two quick outs to keep it a 7-3 game. DeHart pitched an easy sixth before Radford would play add-on in the seventh.

Moss was able to cap off a four-hit game with her first career home run in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-3 Radford lead. ETSU was able to get a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but the comeback attempt stalled allowing Radford to win decisively 9-3.

Game 2
In their second game of the day Radford squared off with Georgia Southern and fell victim to an early offensive outburst by the Eagles. Georgia Southern was able to score three runs behind a two-run shot with two outs which gave them a lead they would never let go of.

Radford struggled to get its offense going until the fifth inning when Moss opened the inning up with a single. A single by Breidt allowed Radford to get two runners in scoring position with just one out, but a pair of pop ups to the short stop ended the threat.

Georgia Southern tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to give them a 6-0 lead. The Highlanders were held scoreless over the final two innings and fell victim to their first shutout of the season.
