McMillan’s Big Game Leads Radford to Win Over Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Radford softball program picked up their third win of the season Sunday afternoon 7-1 over Georgia Southern. Freshman Cori McMillan shined for the Highlanders crushing two home runs and five RBIs.

After being shut out the day before against the Eagles, the Highlanders wasted no time getting their first run across today. In the second inning McMillan got her big offensive game started with a single, stealing second and then advancing to third as the throw trickled into the outfield. Cassi Barbato was able to send McMillan home with an infield single and Radford led 1-0.

Skyler DeHart took the circle for the Highlanders and was efficient. DeHart retired the first four batters on just five pitches and worked her way through a tough Georgia Southern offense all afternoon. The Highlanders held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when an Eagles' home run knotted the game back up at one-all.

Georgia Southern threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, forcing a pitching change where Emily Spingarn would take over. Spingarn faced runners on second and third with just one out and was able to escape the inning without giving up a run and keep things tied. Spingarn got the same Eagles hitter who homered earlier to pop up and then struck out an Eagle to end the inning.

In the following frame, the Radford offense ignited behind the bat of McMillan and retook the lead. McMillan crushed a ball that cleared the center field fence by about 20 feet, scoring Madison Canady and making it a 3-1 lead.

Spingarn tossed another clean inning in the bottom of the sixth, allowing the Radford offense to add to its lead in the seventh. With two outs the Highlanders took advantage of an error to make it 4-1 and that allowed McMillan another plate appearance just a triple shy of the cycle. McMillan didn't get the cycle, but Radford will still take the result of her final at bat. McMillan took full advantage and almost doubled Radford's lead with one swing as she crushed her second home run of the game to make it a 7-1 lead.

Spingarn was able to toss another shutout frame in the bottom of the seventh and Radford was able to win the final game of the Bash in the Boro 7-1. McMillan finished the day recording a hit in all four at bats with five RBIs and scoring three runs. Jordan Moss kept up her hot start to the season with another multi-hit game as well.

In the circle DeHart finished with another quality start tossing four innings of one-run ball giving up just five hits. Spingarn finished the last three innings of the game earning her second win of the young season allowing just two hits while recording a strikeout.
