Highlanders Split Opening Day of Chattanooga Challenge

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Radford softball program split their two games on the opening day of the Chattanooga Challenge Friday defeating SIUE 7-4 and dropping their second game to Indiana State 2-0.

Game 1
Radford burst out the gates in the first game of the day hitting two home runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Jordan Moss got the scoring started with a solo shot to left center despite the cold conditions that would effect play all day. After Lindsay Hunter drew a walk, Rachel Smith continued her hot start to the season with a home run down the left field line.

The Cougars were able to retaliate in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a fielder's choice to make it a 3-1 game. Radford's offense took advantage of some defensive miscues in the top of the second inning as Cassi Barbato scored on a wild pitch and Moss added her second RBI of the day with a ground out.

From there the Highlanders offense would go cold and not push across any more runs until late in the game. SIUE chipped away at the Highlanders leader inning by inning, pushing across one run in the second, fourth and fifth innings to make it a closer 5-4 game.

Jessie Marvin came in to relieve Emily Spingarn in the fifth inning with the Cougars threatening to tie or take the lead. Marvin got two quick outs ending the threat and allowing Radford to hold on to its lead. Radford finally got it's offense to spark again in the seventh with a two out single by Hunter that scored Moss and Barbato. Marvin took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh and preserved it to give Radford it's first victory of the weekend.

The top three hitters in Radford's lineup each recorded two RBI's on the day despite the offense being held to a total of five hits. Spingarn tossed a quality four innings of work with a pair of strikeouts while Marvin finished off the last three innings without giving up a run.

Game 2
In their second game of the day Radford was locked into a pitchers' duel with Indiana State. The Sycamores took a 1-0 advantage early in the first inning scoring a runner who reached by error. The Highlanders' offense went cold through the seven innings with Emily Smith recording the only extra base hit on the day.

Marvin tossed a complete game of seven innings allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five batters. Her strongest performance of the young season wasn't enough for the win, however, as Indiana State held on to win 2-0.

Fresh off injury, Abby Wilson was able to add her second hit of the day against Indiana State while pinch hitting. Cori McMillan, Hannah Poole and E. Smith rounded out the rest of the Highlanders' offensive output in the game.
