Highlanders Fall to South Alabama in Season Opener

MOBILE, Ala. – The Radford Baseball team fell to South Alabama 6-5 in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening at Stanky Field.

Six different Highlanders recorded a hit in the contest, including designated hitter Paul Moore, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a double. In the first inning, Moore laced a two-bagger down the left field line that plated David Bryant to score the first run of the game.

South Alabama (1-0) responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs off Radford starter Brandon Feathers, two via the wild pitch. Feathers was relieved by Luke VonGoedert, who pitched effectively as a bridge to the middle innings, tossing two innings of one-run ball with a strikeout.

Though Radford (0-1) was outhit 12-6, they were able to manufacture runs and take advantage of South Alabama's defensive miscues. In the third inning, right fielder Cameron Pittman walked and came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop. Later in the fourth, with the visitors trailing 4-2, third baseman Zach Whitacre produced an RBI groundout to shortstop that scored Dudley Taw, before Brandon Bagwell came around to score on a wild pitch, knotting the game at 4-4.

In the sixth inning, Taw executed a rare steal of home. With runners at the corners and two out, Whitacre took off from first, and Taw sprinted home to score a run before his teammate was tagged out on the basepaths.

But it proved to be in vain, as the Jaguars rallied to take the lead with an RBI double from Miles Simington in the seventh, giving South Alabama a 6-5 advantage.

Radford used five pitchers throughout the night, including the debut of freshman John Holobetz, who tossed a scoreless eighth inning. The Highlanders' pitching staff was able to limit South Alabama to 2-for-12 with RISP and left nine baserunners stranded.

NOTABLE STATS
  • While Pittman did not record a hit, he did draw three walks in the leadoff spot, and also scored a run.
  • The Highlanders got a hit from the five through eight spots in their order.
  • Four Radford batters were hit by a pitch.
