McMillan’s Walk-Off Home Run Leads Radford Over Tennessee Tech

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Radford softball program got back in the win column Sunday afternoon in a big way knocking off a talented Tennessee Tech program 5-4. Cori McMillan was the hero of the game with her walk-off two-run homer to seal the deal in the bottom of the seventh.

The game got off to a very quiet start for both teams as nobody touched home over the first four innings. Jessie Marvin got the starting nod for the Highlanders and pitched excellently. Marvin tossed a pair of three-up three-down innings to start the game collecting three strikeouts.

In the third inning Tennessee Tech mounted their first offensive threat of the day loading the bases with two outs. Marvin forced a fly out and kept the game tied at zero. After another perfectly thrown inning in the fourth, the Radford offense finally got on the board. The Highlanders showcased their power as Madison Canady hit her first home run of the season and Jordan Moss followed her not long after with a home run of her own to make it a 2-0 lead.

Marvin threw another perfect fifth inning, but Tennessee Tech was able to break the shutout in the sixth. The Golden Eagles got a two-out RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to just 2-1. In the bottom of the sixth Radford was able to get that run back thanks to a clutch single up the middle by Cassi Barbato that made it 3-1.

With a two-run lead and two outs in the top of the seventh, winning the game was just in reach for the Highlanders. The Golden Eagles caught a break with a throwing error off a wild pitch that allowed two runs to score and take the lead 5-4.

The Highlanders were suddenly down to their final three outs in the bottom of the seventh and needed a hero. Lindsay Hunter drew a walk to get a runner on, and the freshman McMillan did the rest. McMillan blasted her team-best fifth home run of the season giving Radford the 6-5 win in walk-off fashion.

McMillan's two-hit day and walk-off home run highlighted the offensive output for the Highlanders. Canady also had a big day at the plate with her two hits and home run. Marvin finished a solid complete game outing with six strikeouts only allowing five hits over the seven frames.
