Softball Splits Opener of The Florida Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Radford softball program split their two games Friday afternoon in the opening day of the Florida Spring Games. Radford defeated Rhode Island in game one 1-0 but fell 5-2 to a tough Southern Miss team in their second game.

Game 1
All it took was one run in the first game of the day for the Highlanders as they took down Rhode Island 1-0 behind a shutout from Skyler DeHart. DeHart began her day stranding two runners in the first frame with a strikeout. Jordan Moss singled to start the bottom half of the inning and was able to get to third by a stolen bases, but she was stranded.

After both squads had three-up three-down innings in the second, Radford was finally able to break through in the third. Cassi Barbato walked to start the inning and Lindsay Hunter also walked to put two runners on with two outs. Freshman Cori McMillan stepped up to the plate and had the big knock for the Highlanders with an RBI single to center field.

Now with a one-run lead, DeHart was able to cruise to victory. The Rams threatened with two runners on in the fourth, but DeHart silenced that threat again. DeHart would retire the next nine straight batters for the Highlanders, allowing them to clinch a 1-0 victory for their sixth win of the season.

DeHart finished the day with seven innings pitched, four strikeouts and just four hits to earn her first win of the season. Moss, McMillan and Emily Smith accounted for the entire Highlanders offense in the game with each recording a hit. The walk Hunter drew was her 11th of the season, a team-best total by wide margin. Hunter's .429 on base percentage also ranks highest on the team.

Game 2
In the team's second game of the day, they faced a big-time opponent in Southern Miss who was coming off a huge upset over No. 4 Florida on the national stage earlier this week. Both teams were held scoreless through the first frame, but Radford was able to strike in the second.

Rachel Smith started things off with a single while Abby Wilson reached thanks to an error. Cassi Barbato was able to score R. Smith and Wilson with a single to left field that gave Radford a 2-0 lead. Jessie Marvin, the starting pitcher, would carry that lead up until the sixth inning.

Southern Miss first struck with a solo home run in the third that made it 2-1. The Golden Eagles burst for four runs in the sixth inning thanks in large part to a two-run homer that gave them a 5-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Emily Spingarn was able to toss a scoreless top of the seventh, but the offense wasn't able to get going in the final frame.

Up Next
Radford is back in action tomorrow for a single game against Omaha (Nebraska) with game set to start at 4 p.m.
