Late-Inning Surge Propels Bucknell Past Radford

RADFORD, Va. – After a tightly contested ball game through seven innings, the Bucknell Bison used a late-inning power surge to upend Radford, 15-2, on Friday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The game was a pitcher's duel early on, as Radford starter Peyton Reesman pitched six spectacular innings, yielding no earned runs and just one hit while striking out 10 Bison hitters. His counterpart Ben Magovern was also on top of his game, as he tossed five innings of one-run ball, pitching around four walks.

Radford (1-4) struck first in the third inning, when first baseman Bradlee Preap was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Cameron Pittman. However, Dudley Taw struck out in the ensuing at-bat as the Bison avoided any further damage.

Bucknell (1-3) clawed back, scoring runs in the fifth and seventh innings, both on errors by Radford defenders. The Highlanders were victimized by four errors which led to three unearned runs for the Bison.

In the seventh inning, Radford put together a rally, loading the bases for David Bryant via two walks and a single from Pittman. Bryant was able to draw a five-pitch walk to tie the game at two, igniting the crowd which came to witness the Highlanders' home opener. But Bucknell induced a groundout by Preap to halt the threat.

From there, the visitors took control, scoring 13 runs in the final two innings. The decisive blow was a three-run homer by Tyler Dunn, which extended Bucknell's lead to 8-2.

Graeme Carroll (1-1) was credited with the win, pitching 2.1 shutout innings of relief for the Bison.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Pittman went 2-for-4, achieving his second consecutive multi-hit game. He also stole a base and drew a walk.
  • While Radford recorded just five hits as a team, they continue to find other ways to get on base, drawing seven walks and a HBP.
  • Of the first 12 outs made by the Bison, Reesman set down nine via the strikeout.
