Radford, Va. – In what was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, the Radford Baseball team executed a safety squeeze to walk off Bucknell 2-1 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.
With runners on the corners and nobody out, Radford left fielder
Michael Williams laid down a bunt that dribbled up the third base line. Catcher
Julian Rojas came racing in from third and dove out of the way of a tag by the Bucknell catcher to slide home safely with the game-winning run.
The Highlanders (2-4) were once again buoyed by their pitching staff, as starter
Zach Davidson delivered six innings of shutout ball. The junior allowed only three hits, walked none, and struck out five.
Radford's bullpen was able to pick up where Davidson left off, as
Derek Domecq and
John Holobetz both had scoreless outings in relief. The freshman Holobetz (1-0) earned the win, as he got eight crucial outs starting in the ninth inning, giving the offense more leeway.
The scoring did not start until the seventh inning when Bucknell (1-4) scratched across a run on an infield single by Kendall Pierson. Brendan Lowery came home on the play, after he led off the frame with a triple down the right field line.
But Radford responded, as
Zack Whitacre opened the home half of the seventh with a double. After a hit by pitch,
David Bryant brought home his teammate with with a sacrifice fly, evening the score at 1-1.
From there, the pitchers continued to dominate, as the two teams combined for two hits over the next three innings. But Rojas singled to leadoff the 11th, setting the stage for the game-winning play by Williams.
Tyler O'Neill (0-1) took the loss for the Bison. He relieved starter Will Greer, who matched Davidson's performance just as well, allowing only one earned run over eight innings.
NOTABLE STATS
- Bryant extended his RBI streak to three games.
- Radford's pitching staff allowed only one hit over the final four innings, on a ball that did not leave the infield.
- Both teams issued only one walk the entire game.
