Second Half Comeback Not Enough Against Aggies
2/5/2022 4:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Women's Basketball program battled back to make things close against North Carolina A&T Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 77-63.
Bridget Birkhead got the Highlanders off to a good start to open up the game, as she hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at six-all. The Highlanders were able to keep things close throughout the opening quarter, but the Aggies used a 6-0 run over the final three minutes to take a 19-10 lead headed into the second quarter.
That run continued into the second quarter as the Aggies suddenly built up a 32-12 lead over the Highlanders. Radford regrouped and would start what would eventually turn into a 20-3 run over two quarters to pull the game back within reach. Rachel LaLonde got that run started with four points thanks to a made basket and two free throws while Ashley Tudor made her first appearance of the week and promptly drained two three-pointers.
Radford went into the third quarter trailing 37-24 and stayed hot. Danielle Montelbano got the scoring started with an easy layup while LaLonde sunk her first three of the afternoon. LaLonde converted another five points and suddenly it was just a 39-36 game. The Aggies drained a three-pointer to spoil the run, but Carmen Williams responded with a three-pointer of her own to make it 42-39.
The Aggies would have a response for each of the Highlanders' attacks from then on, and Radford wasn't able to fully complete the comeback. Birkhead would hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter as Radford tried to fuel one last comeback, but North Carolina A&T was able to hold on and win 77-63.
LaLonde finished another strong game for Radford with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals with the steals and rebounds a team high. Birkhead's 18 points were a team high while Montelbano led the team with six assists. The Highlanders did win the turnover battle today, recording one less turnover than the Aggies.
