SCOUTING REPORT
Clemson enters the season with high expectations under third-year head coach Shawn Poppie. The Tigers have three highly touted freshman in Meeyah Green, Kimora Fields, and Julia Scott, and the recruiting class is the best in program history (rated 9th nationally by 247 Sports and 13th by ESPN). They also boast five big-name transfers with Mackenzie Nelson (Virginia Tech), Taliyah Henderson (North Carolina), Jenna Lawrence (Arkansas), Edie Clarke (Saint Mary's), and Yakiya Melton (USC). The Highlanders held Nelson to just six points on 3-10 shooting in last season's contest at Virginia Tech. The Tigers' coaching staff includes former Radford standout Jayda Worthy, who played for head coach Mike McGuire from 2014-18 and was an assistant from 2020-22. Clemson is receiving votes in both the Associated Press Media Poll and the WBCA/USA Today Coaches Poll.
THE HISTORY BOOK
Radford has never beaten Clemson, having dropped eight of the previous meetings. The Highlanders nearly knocked off the Tigers back on January 22, 1990, falling in double overtime. Clemson took care of the last meeting to the tune of a 74-48 final on Dec. 8, 2024. The Highlanders do boast the most wins (16) from any Big South school vs. the ACC.
SEASON IS HERE
Radford is 18-24 in season openers since moving to Division I in 1984-85 and are 5-8 in such games in the McGuire era. They are 1-10 against power opponents in season openers, with the lone win coming at Virginia Tech on Nov. 10, 2006 (67-60). That game is also the last time Radford won a season opener on the road.
SOMETHING TO PROVE
Like their opponent, Radford has high expectations for the season, both for themselves and decided by other coaches. The Highlanders open the season receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, the first time they open the season with votes since the 2019-20 season. They also were selected (with High Point) as the top team in the Big South in the preseason coaches poll.
SUPER SIMONSEN
Sophomore Georgia Simonsen was selected as the unanimous Big South Preseason Player of the Year. She earned the conference's freshman of the year award after a stellar season where she averaged 11.4 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game, ranking among league leaders. Simonsen also had four double-doubles, including 12 points and 10 rebounds in a WNIT win over Morehead State.
NEW NAMES AND FACES
McGuire and the Highlanders welcome three transfers to this year's team. Senior Kailyn Fields comes by way of Kennesaw State, where the native Atlantan spent three seasons for the Owls and posted 87 assists a season ago. Junior Logan Luebbers Palmer is a sharpshooter from Union, Ky., who was one of Evansville's top scorers last seasons. Sophomore Ralee Bare joins Radford after a strong first act at Lenoir-Rhyne in Division II. A pair of freshman guards, Jordin Richardson (Suffolk, Va.) and Kerri Fluellen (Augusta, Ga.) complete the list of newcomers for 2026-27.
