THE HISTORY BOOK
The Highlanders own a 7-0 record against Southern Virginia, with all seven wins coming in non-exhibition meetings. This is the first time the Spartans are playing at Radford (both counting exhibitions and non-exhibitions) since Dec. 9, 2010. Radford won that contest 71-39.
ABOUT SOUTHERN VIRGINIA
The Spartans, located in Buena Vista, Virginia, play at the NCAA Division III level in the USA South Athletic Conference. Southern Virginia went 21-8 last season and won the USA South Conference Tournament before falling to Denison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Southern Virginia returns just three players from last season's team (no starters). They are led by head coach Melanie Day, who is in her first season at the helm. Day previously served as an assistant coach at BYU (2019-22) and UNLV (2004-07) and played collegiately at BYU (2001-02) and UCLA (1996-99).
SOMETHING TO PROVE
After a season that saw the program win 23 games, a second-place finish in the Big South and a home WNIT win, the Highlanders aim to reach the pinnacle of the conference this season. Radford was picked (along with High Point) to win the Big South in the preseason coaches poll. Sophomore Georgia Simonsen enters as the conference's preseason player of the year, while senior Cate Carlson was named to preseason second team. Head coach Mike McGuire begins his 14th season as head coach and is the winningest coach in Radford basketball history.
