HOME SWEET HOME
Radford is 29-13 in home openers since moving to NCAA Division I for the 1984-85 season. They are 10-3 in home openers with head coach Mike McGuire and have won four-straight. The Highlanders have never lost against a non-Division I program in a home opener, going 10-0. Wednesday begins the 43rd season of Radford women's basketball at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders hold a 408-173 record (.702 win percentage) in the building. It's the fourth-oldest arena in the Big South which opened in 1982 and has hosted many memorable moments, including seven conference championship wins.
SOMETHING TO PROVE
Despite the result, the Highlanders showed some grit against a strong Clemson Tigers team. After trailing 9-0 at the start and by as many as 10 points in the first quarter, rallies through the second and third quarters saw Radford take leads against the Tigers. The Highlanders led for nearly seven minutes of game time in the loss.
NICE FOR WHAT
Junior Angelina Nice was one of the Highlanders to highlight the season opener, scoring a dozen points with six rebounds. The 12 points were a career-best for the rangy guard against a power opponent. Nice was selected by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund as a Servant Leader, recognizing student-athletes who put others first – on their teams, on campus, and in their communities. She is the first Highlander to receive this honor in the program's third year.
FIRST GLIMPSE
Monday marked the Radford debut for six new Highlanders on this year's squad. Kailyn Fields tied for the team lead with 12 points and led the team with a pair of three-pointers. Logan Luebbers Palmer, a junior transfer from Evansville, got the start and totaled 21 minutes with two points, rebounds, and assists. Jordin Richardson and Kerri Fluellen both made buckets in their collegiate debuts, while graduate student Jada Green and sophomore Ralee Bare each logged a handful of minutes down the stretch.
SCOUTING REPORT
The Rams hope to improve from last season's 3-26 campaign. They were picked to finish last in the 14-member Appalachian Athletic Conference in the NAIA. They played Longwood last season and fell 128-31 in Farmville, Va. Bluefield is led by Jake Wright in his third season and returns eight from last season's squad.
THE HISTORY BOOK
Radford is 4-0 all-time against Bluefield, excluding exhibitions. The Highlanders took the last contest, 102-58, back on December 29, 2024. A total of 12 Radford players scored in the win, with Taylor Napper leading all scorers with 15 points. Only Cate Carlson and Angelina Nice remain on the team for Radford from that contest. Now-senior Ashanti Northcross led the Rams with 14 points. Radford recorded their largest victory in program history against Bluefield on December 9, 1975, in a 131-38 final. It still stands as the most points scored and the largest margin of victory.
