Women's Basketball Defeated By Hampton in Big South First Round

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Radford Women's Basketball program had a hot start to their Big South tournament Tuesday afternoon, but ultimately fell to a Hampton comeback by a score of 55-49.

Ashley Tudor tried setting the tone early as she scored an incredible 15 points in just her first 13 minutes played. Hampton opened the game on a 6-2 run, but an and-one by Tudor cut into that lead. A Kyanna Morgan three-pointer gave Radford an 8-6 lead, a lead they wouldn't give up until the end of the first quarter.

Tudor gave the Highlanders five straight points, but Hampton traded shot for shot with the Highlanders to take a 16-15 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter would belong purely to the Highlanders, however. Hampton was held scoreless for seven straight minutes in the second quarter and only hit two field goals the entire quarter.

Destinee Marshall and Rachel LaLonde got in on the scoring fun, and Radford used a 12-0 run to gain a commanding lead. Tudor contributed another five points in the closing minutes to give Radford the 31-22 lead at the break. Radford was able to hold Big South all-conference member Nylah Young to just six points in the first half which was pivotal in silencing the Lady Pirates' offense.

In the third quarter, the script was flipped as the Highlanders struggled to hit their shots. The team only shot 27% in the third quarter, despite five points from Morgan in her quietly strong night. Hampton's offense was able to finally heat up after a cold start to the night, outpacing Radford 17-7. Nine of the Lady Pirates' 17 points in the quarter came from the free throw line.

The fourth quarter was closer between the two squads, but Hampton had a response for each of Radford's attacks. Bryonna McClean exploded for a quick five points including an off balance three-pointer in the comeback attempt. Hampton hit their free throws in the closing minutes, however, and was able to hold on to win 55-49.

Tudor's big first half highlighted the box score on the night, as the sophomore finished with 17 points. Morgan was the other double-digit scorer for Radford while LaLonde had another massive rebounding night finishing with 15. Part of what allowed Hampton to stay in the game was winning the turnover battle as Radford committed 25 to Hampton's eight. Free throws also played a large part in the result as Hampton recorded 15 more shots from the charity stripe than Radford.

Tonight's result marks an end to the Highlanders 2021-22 campaign. The young squad showed signs of strong shooting and exciting finishes over the last month, but will look to regroup, retool and do what it takes to come back stronger next season.
