RADFORD, Va. — The Saint Joseph's Hawks used their high-powered offense to sweep Friday's doubleheader against the Radford Highlanders, winning game one 14-12 before taking the second game by a final score of 10-4.
The home run ball proved be costly for Radford (5-10), who let the Hawks go yard six times on the day, including four in game two. Saint Joseph's catcher Andrew Cossetti led the way, going 2-for-5 with four RBI in the opener, before following that up with a two-home run performance in the second game. Cossetti recorded eight RBI in total, as his team recorded 26 combined hits.
The first game was an old-fashion slugfest. Trailing 7-2 in the seventh inning, the Highlanders struck for four runs in the frame, aided by three hit batsmen. Radford hitters were plunked eight times, the highest single-game total for the program in at least a decade.
In the eighth inning, Cossetti hit a grand slam to right that gave his team an 11-6 advantage. But the Highlanders never wavered, as an RBI double from
Ryan Gilmore and RBI single by
Paul Moore cut into the deficit. The next two batters were both hit by a pitch, setting the stage for
Cameron Pittman's go-ahead single that plated
Ty Dooley and
Bradlee Preap, giving Radford their first lead.
But the lead was short-lived, as Brett Callahan blasted a two-run homer for Saint Joseph's that put them ahead 14-12. The Hawks held on to win, as Noah Weber (1-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the decision.
Game two was less eventful, as the Hawks (8-4) raced out to an early lead and never looked back. Cossetti homered twice, including a two-run shot in the first inning, while Conlan Wall hit a three-run homer in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-2.
Radford did get offensive contributions from third baseman
Zack Whitacre, who hit an RBI double in the fourth as part of another four-hit day. Whitacre now has 11 hits over his last five games.
