Softball Falls Victim to Late Presbyterian Homer

CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford softball program fell in a tight contest Saturday afternoon at Presbyterian as the Blue Hose used a walk-off homer to win 5-4.

Presbyterian was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning despite only one ball leaving the infield. The Blue Hose took advantage of two errors and hit their first of three home runs on the day to grab the early lead.

From there, Jessie Marvin was able to settle in and dial up four straight scoreless frames. Radford's offense wasn't able to get started over the first three innings but came alive in the fourth.

Madison Canady was able to draw a walk allowing Cori McMillan to come up with two outs. McMillan obliterated the no-hitter and shutout bid with one swing as she crushed a home run to right field that made it a 3-2 ballgame.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Radford was able to find their tying run in the top of the sixth. Lindsay Hunter started the inning off with a single down the left field line and was pinch ran for by Kyndall Stanley. An error by the left fielder put runners at second and third bringing up McMillan once again to play hero. McMillan didn't leave the yard this time, but her sacrifice fly to left field brought in the tying run to make it a 3-3 game.

Presbyterian had their response ready to go in the bottom of the sixth as a lead off solo home run gave them back the lead at 4-3. Marvin retired the next three batters straight with two strikeouts to give Radford one last chance in the top of the seventh.

Down to their final out with a runner in scoring position, the Highlanders came up clutch once again as Rachel Smith singled up the middle to score Hannah Poole. The score was now tied up at four, but Presbyterian struck with one last solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the game.

McMillan's home run in the fourth inning was her seventh of the season as the freshman continues to make a huge impact to the team's offense through the early half of this season. McMillan needs just four more home runs to enter the program's single season top-10 list for home runs.
