Softball Splits Doubleheader at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford softball program split their doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Presbyterian, dropping the first game 4-2 and winning the second game 7-4.

Game 1
In the first game of the day the Highlanders got off to an excellent start thanks to Rachel Smith who blasted the team's first home run to lead off a game this season. Madison Canady and Abby Wilson were both also able to collect hits and get into scoring position, but Presbyterian got a pair of crucial outs to end the threat.

Skyler DeHart got the starting nod in game one and was efficient once again. DeHart retired the first four batters of the game, but Presbyterian equalized the game at one-all with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

Radford was able to retake the lead in the top of the third thanks to an error, however. Lindsay Hunter began the inning with a single and made her way around to third with two outs. Cori McMillan put the ball in play and the Blue Hose dropped a fly ball to allow the Highlanders' second run of the day to score.

A solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third and a costly error allowed Presbyterian to jump back out front 3-2. From there the Highlanders were held scoreless over the next three frames and needed a comeback in the top of the seventh.

Hannah Poole got things started with a single and then Hannah Morris provided a huge pinch hit single to put runners on the corners with none out. Canady was able to draw a walk to load the bases, but Presbyterian dialed up three strikeouts to escape the comeback attempt.

Game 2
Radford opened up the second game in a similar way they opened up the first jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Radford was able to gain the lead thanks to a Canady double that scored R. Smith. Emily Spingarn got the starting nod for game two and pitched a scoreless first frame.

Presbyterian was able to get that run back and tie it at one-all in the bottom of the second thanks to a fielding error, however. Hunter drew a walk in the third, but the offense wasn't able to strike again until the fourth. Hannah Poole had the big swing for the Highlanders, a two-run home run giving them a 3-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

In the fifth inning the Highlanders added to their lead thanks to some timely two-out hitting. With the basses loaded, Cassi Barbato singled through the right side to make it 4-1. Poole added another RBI to her day with a single to the shortstop and it was a 5-1 Radford lead.

R. Smith's second home run of the day gave Radford a 6-1 lead in the sixth and a McMillan two-out double gave Radford its seventh run of the day. Spingarn dialed up another clean sixth inning allowing the Highlanders to take a 7-1 lead into the final inning.

Presbyterian was able to scratch across a couple runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Morris came in and closed out the game for Radford getting the last two outs allowing for the 7-4 victory. Radford's win was just Presbyterian's fourth home loss out of 18 total home games this season and snapped a streak of 17 games where the Blue Hose had lost just one game.

In game two the Highlanders also had a couple of players in Kyndall Stanley and Tori Boyd who made their first starts of the year and both collected hits. Boyd had missed the first month of the season with an injury.
