Offensive Outburst Leads Radford to Doubleheader Split with Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford softball program split their doubleheader with Winthrop Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 3-0 but winning the second game in strong fashion 11-6.

Game 1
In the first game of the day the Highlanders were locked in a pitcher's duel as Emily Spingarn had another fantastic day in the circle. The first four innings of Spingarn's day went unscathed as she danced around two scoring opportunities by the Eagles.

In the bottom of the second inning Winthrop got a two-out double, but Spingarn struck out the next batter to keep the game tied. With two outs in the third inning the Eagles rallied again and loaded the bases, but Radford escaped the jam after a line out to center field.

Unfortunately, the offense was held to just the one hit by Rachel Smith, a double to open up the game, and Winthrop cashed in with the bases loaded and just one out in the bottom of the fifth. An error scored the first run, a hit by pitch scored the second and Winthrop made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly as none of their RBIs came from a hit.

Radford had two more chances in the sixth and seventh innings to battle back. The Highlanders were retired in order, though, sealing up the 3-0 loss to Winthrop, the Eagles fourth straight conference victory.

Game 2
In the second game of the day the Highlanders put on an offensive show. R. Smith began the game getting on base once again, this time through a walk, and then stole second. Cori McMillan also drew a walk to start her big day. Hannah Morris, in her first start of the season as the designated hitter, broke through for the Highlanders with a double to left field that gave the team a 1-0 lead.

Abby Wilson followed her up with a single that hit the second base bag that allowed McMillan to score and make it a 2-0 lead. Winthrop was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but Radford kept a 2-1 lead headed into the second.

Tori Boyd reached thanks to an error and Kyndall Stanley walked to set up two runners on for the top of Radford's lineup in the second inning. McMillan took advantage, crushing a no-doubter home run over the centerfield fence that ballooned the lead to 5-1.

After a scoreless bottom of the second, Winthrop battled back yet again scoring two runs with some infield hitting. McMillan made sure Winthrop's offense continued to stay at bay by hitting her second home run of the day to lead off the fourth inning and put Radford up 6-3.

Emily Smith helped play add-on to the lead with a two-out RBI double that highlighted her impressive day at the plate. Boyd notched her first RBI of the season right after Smith, and it was a 9-3 lead for the Highlanders.

The scoring stayed relatively quiet over the next three innings for both teams, although Wilson added the third Highlander homer of the day in the top of the seventh. Winthrop was able to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was no issue as Radford held on to win 11-6.

Five different Highlanders recorded a multi-hit game and three Highlanders also had a multi-RBI game. McMillan's two home runs boosted her season total to nine as she races to become the quickest Highlander to reach double-digit homers needing just one more home run over at least the next eight games.
