Highlanders Take Series Over Winthrop with Exciting Comeback

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Radford (9-12, 3-3 BSC) notched their first comeback victory of the season in a 3-2 win over Winthrop Sunday afternoon. The win gave Radford the 2-1 edge in the weekend series over Winthrop.

Radford took the field today looking to rebound against Winthrop's top pitcher after being shutout yesterday in the series opener. The goal was accomplished practically right away as the Highlanders wasted no time scoring the first run of the game. Cori McMillan doubled to left center and then was driven in by Hannah Morris to make it a 1-0 lead.

Skyler DeHart got the starting pitching nod today and she pitched an efficient six-pitch bottom of the first inning to preserve the lead. Winthrop was able to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead thanks to some timely hitting with runners in scoring position. It was the only runs they would score on the afternoon.

Both teams were then locked into a pitchers duel as neither team got anything going offensively through the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth needing some offense Radford got it through some clutch two-out hitting. McMillan walked to start the inning and stole second. A Morris ground out moved McMillan to third and then Madison Canady had the equalizing hit with a sacrifice fly to right center making it a 2-2 ballgame.

Despite there being two outs and none on, Radford didn't let the inning end. Abby Wilson singled through the left side and then stole second to get a runner back into scoring position. Hannah Poole stepped up big with a single up the middle that scored Wilson and gave Radford the 3-2 lead.

Winthrop mounted a comeback attempt of their own in the bottom half of the sixth quickly getting two runners on with just one out. Radford made a pitching change bringing in Emily Spingarn who quickly got two outs that ended the threat. Spingarn was just as efficient in the bottom of the seventh inning recording three straight outs to secure the 3-2 Radford victory.

All of the Highlanders six hits came from six different players on the day. The team also recorded two stolen bases which were crucial in scoring two of the team's three runs. DeHart finished with a quality outing and the win, striking out two over 5.1 innings allowing just the two runs. Spingarn came in for her first collegiate save and retired five straight batters using one strikeout.
