Radford Downed by Charleston Southern 13-3

N. CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Radford baseball team dropped game two of their conference-season opening series against Charleston Southern by a score of 13-3 on Saturday evening at Nielsen Field.

The Highlanders (6-12) had a difficult time containing the Charleston Southern batting order, as the Buccaneers struck for 18 hits, the most Radford has surrendered in a game this year. First baseman Austin Izzio led the way for the home team, going 3-for-5 with three RBI in the victory.

Radford trailed the entire way, as they gave up two runs in the first inning and surrendered the game's first eight runs. The Highlanders finally struck in the seventh inning, when third baseman Zack Whitacre singled with the bases loaded to drive in James Taussig, who was playing his first game of the season.

Shortstop David Bryant had a chance to cut into the lead with the bases loaded and two outs, but he was retired on a popup to third base, ending the threat.

The freshman Taussig was certainly a bright spot. Making his first start of the year, the Highlanders' DH went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

Couch was impressive for Charleston Southern (9-12), pitching 6.2 innings and scattering eight hits with only one earned run allowed. The Highlanders were hampered by 12 men left on base.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Second baseman Ty Dooley went 2-for-4 and had a two-run single in the eighth inning.
  • Radford recorded double-digit hits (11) for the sixth time this year.
  • The Highlander pitching staff did not hit a batter for the first time in five games.
