BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team fell to 0-4 on the season with a 21-3 defeat at the hands of the Virginia Tech Hokies on Wednesday.
Â
Virginia Tech showed their class on the offensive end early with three quick goals in the first quarter before the Highlanders were able to find some possession on offense. Despite three shots in the first, Radford was unable to find the back of the net and turned the ball over nine times. The Hokies kept the pressure on throughout the first, finding an offensive rhythm to push the margin to 8-0 at the end of the period.
Â
Olivia Hunter did her best with some remarkable saves, finishing with four in the first quarter, but it was not enough as she faced 12 shots on goal and 14 total shots.
Â
In the second period,
Molly O'Brien got the Highlanders on the board with just under five minutes to play, but it was the single highlight in a challenging quarter in which the Hokies continued to push the margin, making it 15-1 at halftime. This was the most points given up and the largest halftime deficit in program history.
Â
Playing with a running clock in the second half, the Highlanders were able to find a couple of goals from
Katie Carroll and
River Rupert, with a
Molly O'Brien assist in the third period. These goals were the third and fifth for Katie and River, respectively. Despite the scoring for Radford, the Hokies were able to put three more on the board for a 18-3 score through three quarters.
Â
The final period featured more of the same with some sloppy play from both teams and less scoring. Virginia Tech did manage to put three more shots in the Radford goal while the Highlanders struggled to make much of anything happen. The teams combined for eight turnovers in the period as the clock slowly wound to zero.
