Offensive Explosion in Game One Highlights Doubleheader Split with James Madison

RADFORD, Va. –Radford (10-13) made their 2022 home debut Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader with last season's College World Series competitor James Madison and came away with a split winning game one 10-2 but dropping the second contest.

Game 1
In the first game of the day the Highlanders offense got off to about as good a start a team could get off to. After Jessie Marvin opened the game with a clean first inning, the first five Highlanders reached base to start the bottom half of the inning. The result was a 5-0 lead.

The scoring got started as Hannah Morris continued her hot streak with a single to right field that scored Rachel Smith. After Cori McMillan stole third, Abby Wilson singled to left field scoring McMillan making it 2-0. Jordan Moss had the biggest swing of the inning as she zipped a three-run homer over the left field fence to give Radford the large advantage.

The scoring would quiet down from there until the fourth inning when the Highlanders struck again. McMillan started the production off with a single and was able to get to third thanks to an error. A wild pitch scored McMillan and brought Taylor Breidt into scoring position. Wilson would bring in her second run of the day with another single, making it a 7-1 Radford lead.

In the bottom of the sixth the Highlanders capped off the offensive outburst with a walk-off that sealed the 10-2 run-rule victory. The Highlanders loaded the bases thanks to a pair of singles and a walk, then Hannah Poole cleared the bases with a double to end the game.

Not to be overshadowed by the offense, Marvin tossed a strong game against a very dangerous James Madison lineup. Marvin threw five innings giving up just one unearned run while striking out three batters to just one walk.

Game 2
The second game of the day, Radford's first night game of the season, didn't go as planned. James Madison used the long ball to score all 14 of their runs. The Dukes didn't rush out to the lead, however, as the Highlanders fought back early to make the game close.

Facing a 2-0 deficit, the bottom of the lineup came up big in the bottom of the third inning. After seven straight Highlanders were retired, Tori Boyd broke that cold streak with a double that hugged the right field line.

Kyndall Stanley then battled in an eight-pitch at bat that ended with her singling up the middle and scoring Boyd. With two outs McMillan stepped up once again for the Highlanders sending a single into right field that scored Stanley and made it a 2-2 game.

James Madison took over from there, however, putting up 11 runs in the top of the fifth that sealed the Highlanders fate in the 14-2 loss.

Up Next
The Highlanders are back at home once again this weekend facing a USC Upstate squad receiving votes in the coaches poll for a three-game Big South series. The series is set to begin Friday at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader is set for Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
