Radford Falls in Doubleheader Against USC Upstate

RADFORD, Va. –Radford (10-15, 3-5) came up short in both their contests against a tough USC Upstate squad Friday afternoon.

Game 1
In the first game of the day the Highlanders faced a 3-0 deficit early due to some USC Upstate small ball thanks in part to two stolen bases. USC Upstate would then make it a 4-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a squeeze bunt that scored a runner on third.

The Highlanders did not back down and got a huge response from Madison Canady in the third inning. Rachel Smith walked and Cori McMillan doubled to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs Canady came up clutch with a strong home run the cleared the trees in center field. Radford was right back into the game only trailing 4-3.

After the four runs over the first two innings, starting pitcher Jessie Marvin settled into a groove and paved her way through the dangerous Spartan lineup. Marvin gave up just a single run over the last five frames and tallied a season-high seven strikeouts.

Radford had another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth when McMillan singled and Morris walked, allowing Canady another shot to put Radford in front. Canady crushed the ball to the left side, but a Spartan defender made a spectacular play to end the inning. That was the last threat the Highlanders were able to mount offensively, as USC Upstate held on to win 5-3.

Game 2
The second game of the day saw one rough inning early put the Highlanders down 5-0 and allowed USC Upstate to take two wins on the day. USC Upstate used the long ball in game two, scoring two home runs in that five-run second inning.

Outside of that one inning, Emily Spingarn tossed a quality game giving up just the one run outside of that. Skyler DeHart also entered in relief for the last two innings, throwing two zeroes up on the board.

Radford got its lone run of the game for Radford thanks to Cassi Barbato who crushed a homer over the trees in left center. Hannah Poole, McMillan and Canady all also added hits for the game as McMillan and Canady capped off impressive afternoons at the plate. McMillan also stole her seventh base of the season in the sixth inning, still a perfect seven for seven in stolen bags this spring.
