Highlanders Fall Against USC Upstate

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (10-16, 3-6 BSC) fell in a tough game against USC Upstate Saturday afternoon 14-3.

USC Upstate used two big offensive innings to gain their runs on the day, scoring four runs in the first inning and eight in the third. All eight of the runs scored in the third inning were unearned as two critical errors allowed the Spartans to add on.

Radford got some offense moving in the opening inning of the game thanks to some good hitting at the top of the lineup. Rachel Smith opened the inning with a hard-fought walk and then Cori McMillan replaced her on the bases due to a fielders choice.

Hannah Morris just keeps hitting for the Highlanders as her single moved McMillan into scoring position at third base. Madison Canady did the rest, poking a single through the right side to score McMillan.

Before the game came to a close, Morris also entered the circle and pitched a quality inning for the Highlanders. Morris induced some soft contact after giving up a lead off double in the fourth inning and gave up just the one run. The fifth inning was the same as Morris navigated around an early hit and gave up just one run.

In the bottom of the fifth Radford got a breath of fresh air thanks to Cassi Barbato. Barbato clobbered a pitch over the right field trees for a two-run homer, her second straight game with a home run.
