Radford Falls in Doubleheader at UNC Greensboro

GREESNBORO, N.C. –The Radford softball program fell in both their games at UNC Greensboro Wednesday. The Highlanders lost game one 4-0 but were competitive in a tight 4-3 loss in game two.

Game 1
In game one the Highlanders fell victim to their second shutout of the season and were kept relatively off the basepaths with 16 strikeouts. In her first start at shortstop this season, Hannah Poole collected a multi-hit game that included a double in the first inning.

Radford was able to get runners in scoring position multiple times over the first three innings, but UNC Greensboro kept the Highlanders from touching home plate in all three instances. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second and then added three more runs with two outs in the third to build their 4-0 lead.

Jessie Marvin, the Highlanders starting pitcher in the game, threw another season-high in strikeouts with nine in the game. The six walks haunted, however, with the Spartans taking advantage despite only having three hits in the game.

Game 2
The second game of the day saw the Highlanders' bats create more contact and put Radford in a close game through the full seven innings. The Spartans were able to open the game with a 2-0 lead thanks to a home run. In the third inning the Highlanders got the bats moving.

The bottom of the Highlanders' lineup stepped up as Taylor Breidt and Kyndall Stanley both recorded singles. With runners on second and third and two outs, freshman Cori McMillan had the clutch hit once again as she singled up the middle to score Breidt. After a throwing error Stanley was able to score and it was a 2-2 game.

Emily Spingarn, the Highlanders' starter for game two, dialed up her second straight scoreless frame in the bottom of the third to keep things tied. In the fourth Radford was able to take a lead. Abby Wilson drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Hunter. Cassi Barbato singled up the middle, Wilson scored and Radford had their first lead of the day.

After being held scoreless again in the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans had one last offensive burst left in them. In the bottom of the fifth the Spartans got a huge go ahead two-run home run to take a 4-3 lead. The Highlanders were retired in order the rest of the way, unable to overcome the late home run.
