RADFORD, Va. — In an old-fashioned slugfest that saw 17 runs and 26 combined hits, the Radford baseball team fell to USC Upstate 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.
The Highlanders (7-16, 2-4 Big South) saw contributions from numerous spots in their lineup, including center fielder
Cameron Pittman, who went 3-for-5 with a run. Third baseman
Zack Whitacre also recorded three hits and drove in a run.
USC Upstate (16-8, 5-1 Big South) struck early, scoring four times in the first inning thanks in part to a throwing error by Radford starter
Zach Davidson that allowed two runs to cross the plate.
Radford was able to battle back, as the home team scored twice in the fourth inning on passed balls by Spartans' catcher Damon Maynard. Later in the fifth, catcher
Julian Rojas lofted a sacrifice fly to right field that tied the game at four.
However, it would be the last time the game was even, as USC Upstate scored twice in the sixth inning, again aided by a throwing error by the defense. Radford committed four errors on the day, leading to four Spartan runs.
Offensively, Upstate was paced by shortshop Cole Caruso, who went 3-for-5. In the seventh inning, his teammate Adam Grob was able to drive him in with an RBI double as the visitors extended the lead to 10-5.
Kevin Davis (2-2) earned the win for the Spartans, recording seven outs over the middle innings.
William Flanagan (0-3) took a tough-luck loss, surrendering two unearned runs in the fifth inning.
