Highlanders Compete at Winthrop; Moran Shines in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. / ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford track & field program competed at two meets this weekend. Graduate student Hannah Moran represented the Highlanders at the Raleigh Relays where she once again torched the record books while the rest of the team headed down to Rock Hill for the Adidas Winthrop Invitational.

Adidas Winthrop Invite
At Winthrop, three Highlanders recorded top-10 performances in school history, five set new personal records and two won events.

As has become a trend, it was another strong showing for the distance squad. Kayland Bond and Savannah Hoff started things off with a 1-2 showing in the 3,000m steeple. It was a big performance for Hoff, who jumped into the record book for the first time outdoors, moving to sixth all time with her 11:31.69 showing, just behind Bond's 11:26.23.

Next, Chloe Wellings blasted her PR in the 5,000m to take the win in a time of 17:26.72. In the same race, Abby Seigel took down her best time by over 20 seconds to run under 19 minutes for the first time in seventh place with a time of 18:41.75.

On day two in the 1,500m, MegAnne Gilmore showed off her speed again with the ninth-best time in Radford history, 4:45.10, good for second place in the race.

Bayle Wood also earned a PR on the weekend with her throw of 36.85m (120'11") in the discus.

In the sprints, Breauna Lane and Julia Burkley picked up heat wins in the 200m and 400m, respectively, while Burkley also collected a season best in the 400H.

Raleigh Relays
Over in Raleigh, Hannah Moran not only took over two-and-a-half minutes off the school record at 10,000m, but set a Big South Conference record in the process. Her time of 33:39.16 represents the first time a Big South competitor has broken 34 minutes in the event.

Moran used a strong second half of the race to move up top finish ninth in the event. She negative-split the even with each half being fast enough to rank in the top 10 in Radford history over 5,000 meters, while her second half was faster than the current 5,000m school record.

QUOTABLE
"On a very windy weekend I am proud of how we competed despite the less than ideal conditions," said Director of Track & Field Shelli Sayers. "The majority of the team took a step forward.  I'm excited to see what we put together in two weeks.

"The highlight of the weekend was Hannah. To break a conference record is so exiting and cements her as one of the best to ever run in the Big South."
