Men’s Tennis Downs Gardner-Webb 5-2 in Final Road Big South Match

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Radford (12-5, 6-0 BSC) went into enemy territory Wednesday afternoon and came out with another victory over Gardner-Webb 5-2 to move to a still-perfect 6-0 record in conference play.

The evening match began with a tightly contested doubles point that came down to two intense tiebreakers on courts one and three. On court one Radford was locked in a tight tiebreaker as Andres Silva and Demis Taramonlis battled for a long tiebreaker point. Silva and Taramonlis outlasted their opponents with an intense 7-6(10) victory.

On court three, Aditya Balsekar and Robert Hagen led 5-2 but fell behind 5-6 in a huge comeback by their Runnin' Bulldogs opponents. Balsekar and Hagen did not give in as the duo fought back to win 10-8 in the tiebreaker point and clinch the doubles point. With Radford now leading 1-0, attention turned to singles with the Highlanders needing three courts to clinch.

Gardner-Webb equalized the match at one-all by winning court six, but Radford responded thanks to Silva who picked up a strong 6-2, 6-3 victory on court three. The Runnin' Bulldogs got another court to briefly tie things again at 2-2 by taking court two, but Konstantinos Raptis came up big to give Radford back the lead by taking court four 6-3, 6-3.

After a huge clinch last weekend against Presbyterian, Taramonlis was the clinching court once again for the Highlanders today with a 6-4, 7-5 win on the top flight. Balsekar closed out the afternoon with a win of his own, 6-3, 7-6(3) giving Radford the 5-2 win.

Balsekar and Taramonlis both remain unbeaten in conference singles play with their wins today, with Balsekar's win being his 12th straight as the sophomore is putting together another incredible run similar to his freshman season run of 14 straight singles wins.
