Power Surge Lifts Highlanders Past The Shore

Radford, Va. – On the strength of three RBI from catcher Julian Rojas and a home run by third baseman Zack Whitacre, the Radford baseball team powered its way past Maryland Eastern Shore, 8-2, on Friday night to snap a two-game losing streak.

Rojas was the key piece of the offensive surge, going 2-for-4 with three driven in and a run scored, his second multi-hit game of the year. In the fifth inning, with the score knotted at two, the Highlanders' backstop laced a double to straightaway center that scored Paul Moore and David Bryant.

The hit was part of a four-run fifth inning for Radford (3-6), who posted their highest-scoring game of the season.

The scoring festivities started in the bottom of the first, as left fielder Cameron Pittman led off the game with a double. Later in the frame, the right fielder Moore brought him home with a single to center, putting Radford ahead 1-0.

In the second inning, Whitacre came through with a 397-foot solo blast to right-center field, his second consecutive game with a home run. For the day, the Highlanders recorded nine hits, including three of the extra-base variety.

The Shore (0-9) did rally in the fourth thanks to Highlander miscues. With a runner at third, right fielder Brian Cordell reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, tying the game at two. Radford committed three errors on the day, as did the Hawks.

However, Radford had the response. After the double by Rojas, Ty Dooley reached on an error by the Shore's first baseman Alex McCoy, scoring Rojas and Dudley Taw. From there, the home team never looked back. Rojas also chipped in an RBI single in the sixth inning that plated Bryant.

Luke VonGoedert (1-1) earned the win for Radford, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter William Flanagan. The Highlanders' starter was himself impressive, tossing four innings and allowing one earned run and two hits.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Each of the first five hitters in the Radford batting order got a hit.
  • Moore went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two walks.
