Covington's Complete Game Carries Hawks Past Radford

RADFORD, Va. – Noah Covington pitched a complete game, allowing only three earned runs and five hits while walking none, to carry Maryland Eastern Shore past Radford 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.
The Highlanders (3-7) had a tough time generating offense. After The Shore scored a run in the first inning, Radford responded with two in the bottom of the second, as second baseman Ty Dooley knocked a two-run single to right center that plated Paul Moore and Adam Morris.
But from that point on, Radford crossed the plate just once over the final seven innings, with the lone run coming from an RBI double by left fielder Cameron Pittman in the fifth inning. It marked the third straight game for Pittman with a hit, and his second straight with a double.
Radford starter Peyton Reesman put together another impressive outing, pitching six innings, allowing one earned run and three hits while striking out seven Hawks.
Maryland Eastern Shore (1-9) was led offensively by shortstop Dillon Oxyer, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. That RBI came in the top of the seventh, when Oxyer singled to left, giving the Hawks a 4-3 lead. The Shore added two runs in the eight to account for the final 6-3 margin.
Radford first baseman Tanner Barrs had a stellar day at the plate, recording two hits, including a double in the ninth that sustained the Highlanders' rally. But Covington induced a groundout off the bat of Ryan Gilmore, accounting for the 27th and final out of the ballgame.

The rubber match of the series will start at noon on Sunday.
