Highlanders Fall in Final Day of Florida Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Radford softball program dropped both of their contests Sunday morning to Middle Tennessee and Long Island.

Game 1
In the first game of the day against Middle Tennessee the Highlanders got off to a rough start as Middle Tennessee opened the game with three runs off of five hits. Radford wouldn't go away quietly, however, and began their comeback attempt in the second inning.

Abby Wilson sparked the offense for the Highlanders, hitting a two-out solo home run to make it a 3-1 game. Middle Tennessee added the run back to their lead in the top of the third, but Radford's offense sparked again in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs once again, Cassi Barbato came up clutch for Radford hitting a two-run home run scoring Rachel Smith and make it a one-run ballgame.

Radford was able to get a potential tying runner into scoring position to start the fifth inning, but two quick outs silenced the threat. Middle Tennessee was able to add two more runs in the top of the seventh and eventually hold on to win 6-3.

Barbato and Wilson's two home runs provided all of the Highlanders' offense on the day, but Hannah Poole also added a pinch-hit appearance hit. Jessie Marvin got the starting nod striking out two hitters over five innings while Hannah Morris closed out the final two innings of the game.

Game 2
Radford got off to a hot start in their game against Long Island, scoring four runs in the first frame thanks to Cori McMillan. The Highlanders were able to load the bases thanks to walks drawn by Rachel Smith, Wilson and Jordan Moss which set up McMillan to crush a grand slam with two outs in the inning.

Emily Spingarn dialed up a scoreless bottom of the first to keep the lead intact, but Long Island would take advantage of two errors in the bottom of the second to put up five runs and take a 5-4 lead over Radford. The Highlanders offense wasn't able to replicate that first inning throughout the rest of the game and eventually fell 6-4 to the Sharks.

Madison Canady was able to add a double in the game while Emily Smith and Rachel Smith both also collected hits. Spingarn got through the trouble in the second inning to only allow just one run the rest of the way.

Up Next
Conference play is finally here for the Highlanders as they will hit the road to face Presbyterian for a three-game series this upcoming weekend.
