Balanced Offensive Attack Leads Radford to Win Over Holy Cross

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team strung together a season-high 14 hits while also hitting for the cycle as a team in a 10-5 victory over Holy Cross on Monday afternoon.

The Highlanders (5-7) got multi-hit performances from each of the first four batters in their lineup, and all but two starters reached base safely. Leading the charge was shortstop David Bryant, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI. In the fourth inning, with Radford trailing by two, Bryant hit a two-run single to left that scored Cameron Pittman and Adam Morris, the latter who had previously reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, extending the inning.

That gave way to the designated hitter Bradlee Preap, who hit another single through the left side, scoring two more runs. After Pittman swiped home on a double-steal, catcher Julian Rojas checked in with an RBI double to extend the Highlander advantage to 7-5.

The outburst was part of a six-run fourth inning for the Highlanders, who came back from being down 5-1 earlier in the game. It was the second consecutive game in which the Red & White rallied to win after facing a four-run deficit, having done so against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday.

Holy Cross (1-11) got off to a great start offensively, scoring the game's first three runs and knocking out Radford starter Gene McGough before the first inning was over.

But as has been the case numerous times this year, the Highlanders persevered, showcasing their best offensive outing of the season with 14 hits and 21 total bases.

Radford also collected numerous extra-base hits. In the first inning, Pittman launched a solo home run to right field for his first long ball of the season. Later in the fourth, second baseman Ty Dooley came through with a hustle triple to right center that plated Paul Moore, kickstarting the Highlander rally. For the day, Dooley was 4-for-5 with a run scored.

Luke VonGoedert (2-1) was credited with the win, as the junior southpaw pitched 2.1 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts. Not to be overlooked in the winning effort was William Flanagan, who tossed three scoreless innings and helped bridge the way for Alex Perkins to close out the game.

With the victory, Radford has won consecutive games for the first time all year, and has been victorious in three of their past four games.
