Comeback Attempt Comes Up Short as Highlanders Fall to ECU

RADFORD, Va. – Despite a late ninth-inning rally, the Radford baseball team dropped a nonconference game to East Carolina 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Highlanders (5-8), who were stymied offensively for most of the day but put together a furious ninth-inning rally. Down to their final out and trailing 7-2, Radford scored three runs in the frame, sparked by second baseman Ty Dooley's single to left that scored Tanner Barrs.

It was one of four hits on the day for Dooley, who had his second consecutive four-hit game. He also scored two runs.

After two runners advanced on a passed ball, left fielder Adam Morris then knocked a two-RBI single to center that cut the deficit to 7-5. The Highlanders had the potential tying run in the batter's box, but newly-inserted Pirates pitcher C.J. Mayhue induced a groundout by Cameron Pittman to seal the win.

East Carolina (7-6) led the entire way, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning. In the ninth, hey were able to stretch a 5-2 lead to 6-2 after Lane Hoover came through with an RBI double. That run proved to be consequential, as Radford's comeback attempt fell just short. Defense was an issue for the home team, as they committed four errors.

Danny Beal (2-0) earned the win for the Pirates, pitching four innings while allowing one run on three hits and no walks. ECU was led offensively by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Brandon Feathers got the start for Radford — his first since Opening Day — and went two innings, yielding no earned runs and no walks with a strikeout.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Pittman had another productive game, drawing two walks and scoring a run with an RBI.
  • Relief pitcher Derek Domecq pitched four quality innings out of the bullpen, surrendering just one run.
  • Each of the five relievers that the Highlanders used allowed one run to score.
