Softball Bounces Back in Dominant 6-1 Victory Over Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (11-18, 4-6 BSC) bounced back in a big way Friday afternoon in a 6-1 victory over Gardner-Webb. The Highlanders trailed early but battled back using an impressive 11 hits and played sound defense to the tune of no errors.

The Highlanders and Runnin' Bulldogs both were quick in their plate appearances today as 11 of the game's outs occurred on the first pitch. Radford's hungry offense paid off as four players had multi-hit games, led by Madison Canady's three.

Gardner-Webb grabbed a 1-0 lead early after two bloop hits put runners in scoring position with none out. Jesse Marvin, today's starting pitcher, didn't let the damage spiral out of control as she dialed up three straight outs to keep it a one-run ballgame.

Radford made a lot of contact first time through the order but didn't have much come out of it. Marvin continued to cruise right along which allowed the Highlanders to strike for the lead in the third inning.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Canady stepped up for her first big hit of the day as she doubled to right center to score both runners and put Radford out front. Smart baserunning got Canady to third and Hannah Poole singled to the shortstop scoring Canady and extending the lead.

Radford struck again in the fifth inning for another trio of runs. Cori McMillan started the inning with a double and Canady singled to move her to third. After Canady stole second, Poole added another two RBIs to her impressive day with a shot down the left field line for a double. Abby Wilson's sacrifice fly scored Poole and gave Radford the 6-1 lead.

Marvin had one of her more dominant outings of the spring as she cruised the rest of the way to lead Radford to victory. Marvin finished with six strikeouts while only allowing the one run and saw a huge improvement by only giving up one walk which came late in the seventh inning.

Radford's offense worked without the long ball today as the team kept it in the yard and moved baserunners even when down to their last out in an inning. Rachel Smith, Emily Smith and Jordan Moss (who went two-for-two with a walk) all rounded out the impressive offensive showing by the program.
