RADFORD, Va. — Third baseman
Bradlee Preap recorded a career-high five hits while driving in four runs as the Radford baseball team cruised past Gardner-Webb 14-3 on Sunday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Highlanders won their first Big South Conference series of the year.
Preap got his memorable day started in the first inning when he laced a single up the middle that scored left fielder
Tanner Barrs, putting Radford ahead 1-0. Later in the fourth, the junior from California hit a two-RBI double to left center to give the home team a 5-1 lead. He later came around to score on a wild pitch.
Radford (10-22, 4-8 Big South) also saw contributions at the plate from shortstop
Ty Dooley, who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Dooley and Preap combined for eight of the Highlanders' 16 hits on the afternoon.
As a team, Radford put together an impressive pitching performance for the second straight day, as starter
Zach Davidson battled through 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on 101 pitches while striking out seven.
Foster Seitz (1-0) came in to give his teammate a lift, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings and earning his first win of the season.
Gardner-Webb (11-22, 2-7 Big South) was limited to just three hits. Two of those hits came from the bat of Daegan Brady, who also recorded all three of the team's RBI, including a two-run single in the fifth that cut the lead to 6-3.
However, the Highlanders responded with a six-run fifth inning. To no surprise, Preap was in the middle of it, as he followed up Dooley's RBI single with a base knock of his own to extend the lead to 10-3. He added another single in the seventh and was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning, reaching base safely in all six of his plate appearances.
