RADFORD, Va. — The Radford baseball team surrendered three home runs, including a second-inning grand slam, as they fell to Davidson 13-9 in nonconference action on Tuesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats got out to a quick start, scoring the first seven runs of the ballgame. The onslaught was highlighted by a two-out grand slam in the second inning off the bat of Michael Carico that put the visitors ahead 4-0. Carico, who went 2-for-6 with six RBI on the night, also added a two-run blast in the eighth.
Radford (10-22) did get a fine showing from DH
David Bryant, who recorded three hits in his return from injury. In the fourth inning, Bryant laced a bases-clearing double to left center, cutting the Davidson lead to 7-3. Later in the sixth, the senior added another double, this time plating second baseman
Avery Spencer and trimming the deficit to 7-6.
But that was as close as the Highlanders would get, as Davidson (25-6) mounted a rally in the late innings. The Wildcats scored a run in the seventh, added four more in the eighth, and tacked on another in the ninth to account for the final margin.
William Flanagan (0-4) took the loss for the Red & White, as he pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four runs, though none were earned. Radford used eight pitchers on the evening, one of which was
Derek Domecq, who tossed two solid innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs.
Although the Highlanders entered the ninth trailing by seven, they certainly did not go down easy. After left fielder
Tanner Barrs scored on a balk, newly-inserted center fielder
Adam Morris blasted a two-run homer to left field that cut the deficit to 13-9. It was Morris' first home run of the season. However, Spencer was retired on a groundout in the ensuing at-bat, sealing the victory for the Wildcats.
Will Schomberg (4-0) earned the win for Davidson, tossing 2.2 innings of work across 51 pitches.
