Highlanders Rally Late but Fall Short in Series Finale

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford softball program fell to Longwood 5-3 Sunday afternoon in their weekend series finale. Cori McMillan highlighted the afternoon with her home run in the fourth inning becoming the third fastest Highlander to reach 10 home runs in a season.

Longwood opened up the game with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first as they had done in the first inning of both of Saturday's games as well. With a 3-0 lead Radford looked to climb back and got the offense going in the later half of the game.

In the fourth inning McMillan broke up the shutout and no-hitter with one swing as she crushed her tenth home run of the season. McMillan is the third fastest Highlaner to reach the mark doing so in 34 games. McMillan was one game slower for the second fastest mark as Jessie Hutchens hit 10 homers in 33 games during the 2014 campaign.

Down 5-1, Radford continued to fight in the fifth. Lindsay Hunter drew her team-best 20th walk of the season to start the inning. Taylor Breidt would pinch run and advance home after a throwing error that made it a 5-2 game.

After starter Jessie Marvin tossed a solid four innings of work, Skyler DeHart entered the game for the final two innings. DeHart didn't allow any runs and also struck out a batter, facing just one over the minimum.

In the seventh inning Emily Smith started things right with a single forcing Longwood to make a pitching change. Facing the new pitcher, Lindsay Hunter worked the count full and drew her second walk of the day. Cassi Barbato was then hit by a pitch and Radford had the bases loaded with none out.

The Highlanders inched closer with their first run of the inning thanks to Rachel Smith who singled through the left side scoring Emily Smith. Longwood would get three straight outs unfortunately, ending the comeback attempt.
